It’s no surprise that Michael Jordan and LeBron are high on the list - but some of the other ballers on the list really had me surprised! 2012 Upper Deck SP Authentic Golf is the very first set in this series since 2005! You’ll find some of today’s best golfers including Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Dustin Johnson. You will find 3 autographs in each box, plus there are some serial numbered rookies to chase down as well.

I also analyze 2012 Panini Prominence Football, which is an interesting set with 5 different ‘rookie’ sets within the product. I actually am a fan of that, as long as one of your favorite players is in the ‘photo-shoot’ group of rookies that get cards. I also take a look at some box break sales - and how sellers and buyers can benefit from these sales.

We touch on a few products that have come out recently. 2012 Panini Americana Heroes and Legends is a mixture of Olympians and other athletes, presidents, astronauts and even war veterans. It’s a pretty cool set that lots of people that don’t collect cards regularly will probably enjoy because of all the variety inside.

My favorite sports is BASKETBALL - and I’m really excited about the season and this years Panini Prestige Basketball. I think this is a cool set because it delivers ~100 rookie cards and ~75 autograph rookies. I think there will be lots of excitement around the NBA this season coming off the London Olympics - and I expect many of these young players to play big roles on their teams this season.

On last week’s show we got some feedback on selling cards online for a serious business or career. These are some great tips that really take advantage of eBay’s fee structure that allows you to list items on the site essentially for free. We also talk about some other ways to pick up products cheaply, and how to stay educated on product without opening it yourself.

I think that with Topps going with on-card autographs in 2012 Topps Platinum Football, that they had to make the top names like Andrew Luck, RG3, Trent Richardson and Ryan Tannehill much more rare than any of the other cards in the set. Panini Momentum Football is a ‘new’ brand (that has been re-born from the past) - and contains mostly sticker autograph … but the RG3 and Andrew Luck auto RC’s start at 399. I don’t think $200 is great value for any box, but if you can find 1 pack of this for $20 or $25 - it would be a fun break.

Fleer Retro basketball has some inserts that mimic the original versions that are very popular today. Precious Metal Gems #/150, #/50 and #/10 are big sellers right now, and we’ll see if the values hold up as more people open the product. Boxes are really expensive, selling for north of $325.00 in some cases. The real big hits in this product (aside from Michael Jordan and LeBron James autographs) are non-auto inserts that are ‘retro’ designs of the past.

Kevin Heffner from Historic Autograph Company joins us to discuss the recently released Why The Hall Not set that features players that should be in the HOF with legends that already are. Plus some news about the companies 1st non-baseball release.

Finally the owner of Blowout Cards joins us to discuss why the National Sports Collectors Convention is important to his business. Even if you’re business isn’t quite as big as Blowout Cards - you get some good advice on how to use Card Shows to grow your business.

2012 Topps Chrome Baseball came out at around $72.00 per box. It has lots of parallel cards and autographs of Bryce Harper, Yu Darvish, Matt Moore and more MLB rookies.

2012 Topps Finest Football is out, and this set is strictly for the rookie card collectors. There are a few veteran players in here but not many. Hobby boxes (2 mini boxes) sold for around $105.00 the day they came out.

2011 Upper Deck Exquisite Football is out FINALLY! I think this set is worth the wait, the Shadowbox cards are really cool and there are tons of on-card autographs in this set. Boxes came out in the $555.00 range - if you can find one.

One of the highlights today was a panel discussion by the Topps Company, where they talked about redemption cards, getting Bryce Harper into sets, future products, and other things related to manufacturing cards. If you need a Cliff Notes version of what happened here is a link. We talked about what else to expect for the rest of the show. We close the show with some tips from local dealers that have had success with selling gaming cards in their sports cards shops. It seems like sports cards are less and less a part of the business and dealers are having lots of success selling Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic and other gaming cards in their stores. However, this week is all about sports and sports collectibles and they have been on in full display at the convention.

Also I wanted to add since this is show number 100, I wanted to thank all the listeners that have contacted me throughout the last four years and I plan on continuing the podcast and enjoying a hobby right along with you thanks again.

NFL teams are just getting into training camp mode - and the fantasy football invites are rolling. That also means that plenty of new football card releases are making their way into our hands.  Two new sets from Panini are kind of interesting. 2012 Donruss Elite Football reminds me a lot of last seasons release - however I really like the inscription autographs … which have different ink and card-stock variations.

2012 Score Football is a very cool set for the fact that it only cost $1 per pack! You’ll find rookie cards of 100 different players, and select rookies have autographs and photo variations.

We are on the eve of the National Sports Card Convention in Baltimore … we will have much more coverage later in the week - so today’s program is like the pre-game to the Super Bowl … 8 hours before the game starts. However, I do give tips for both buyers and sellers who attend card shows - so it’s worth checking out.

Often times we collect players from our favorite team - but I sometimes find myself buying players that I just think are going to have a good career. Occasionally I find players who’s card values are lower than I think they might be if they got a better opportunity or started getting on T.V. more often. It all kinds of depends on what kind of collector you are, but the bottom line is the more thought you have going into your purchases - the better they usually turn out.

We also talk a little bit about the recently release 2012 Score Football set. I like that they have the ‘throwback’ rookies, since Score has been a brand in football since 1989.

I take some questions I’ve got from listeners over the last few weeks and answer them on the air. I had a really good buy-sell-hold segment lined up on the previous versions … but we save that for a later date. I do mention that I really think Dwight Howard cards offer an interesting short term buying opportunity. I honestly think he’s going to be traded to the Lakers either before the season - or during … and I think that will give his cards a really nice pop.

Fake Patch Cards, Fake Autographs, Bad Traders, Phony Websites, PayPal Scams, Pack Searchers + More + The bottom line is if it’s too much money for you to find out later that it’s fake - don’t buy it.

There were several new releases over the last few weeks, and I thought it would be cool to talk about some of them.

11/12 Panini Contenders Hockey has some really cool looking patch cards with silver ink on black cardboard that are very nice. The checklist isn’t super deep, so it might be worth checking out to see if your favorite players are included.

11/12 Donruss Elite Hockey is a set I actually got to open a box of. I actually really like the look of the cards, but felt that there could be a few more parallel cards in the set.

11/12 Panini Past & Present Basketball is a very cool set because it includes redemption cards for both 11/12 NBA RC’s AND 12/13 NBA rookies. The only thing about this set I want to caution people about is the auto redemptions may or may not go in order of the 2011 NBA Draft. I don’t think Panini knows yet, so just be careful.

Panini dropped the bomb on football collectors wallets the last few weeks with 2011 Playoff National Treasures Football and 2011 Panini Playbook Football coming out very close to each other. I think that Playbook might offer the better value for RC card collectors because you essentially have a 1:36 chance at getting a top name like Cam Newton, A.J. Green or Andy Dalton. National Treasures has more cards/content, but if you’re looking for rookies, Playbook might be the better choice.

Lastly, I was contacted by the folks at www.wax-eye.com about a new set of sticker cards they released called Cereal Killers. The set mimics popular cereal box themes with artist Joe Simko providing unique pieces of artwork you can stick anywhere. There are sketch cards inserted 1:2 boxes and other rare cards like magnets and foil cards. I think these kind of sets are cool because if you have someone you know that doesn’t like sports - they might get into card collecting with these types of products. Also, if you are looking to become a dealer or seller of cards - don’t overlook sets like this that can provide an extra source of income over selling only sports related items.

We also talk about the very 1st NBA product that went live for the 2011-12 season, NBA Hoops Basketball. This is a pretty cool product, and it’s nice that it doesn’t cost too much ($1.99 per pack at the hobby level) and there are some interesting autographs, including Jeremy Lin. Too bad it doesn’t have rookies like Kemba Walker and MarShon Brooks … we’ll have to wait another month or two.

I put up a year end piece that shows the prices of Topps & Bowman baseball case prices and how they are selling on eBay at the current time. It kind of got me thinking about the rip & flip idea (instead of selling the boxes un-opened) so we’ll talk about that strategy a bit.

We talk about some sets that have come out recently too. I like 2011 Gold Standard Football for the same reasons I like the basketball product - it has a nice theme and every card sticks to the ‘gold’ theme. We actually pulled another real gold card (2/2) in our football break courtesy of Panini. Another set came out recently - 2011 Bowman Sterling Football is an interesting set because it really only contains rookies.

I actually make some ’sell’ calls that go against the popular opinion of many. I would be selling Matt Forte, Mark Ingram, Cam Newton, and probably every 2011 NFL rookie right now - because after the season, no one will care about anything but Andrew Luck. Also, if you look at Dez Bryant, Sam Bradford and other rookies from 2010 - their cards can be had for less a year later..so it’s usually best to wait on these ‘hot’ rookies and players.

We got a copy of ‘Your Gridiron Gourmet’ from author Lisa Jensen the other day. It’s filled with all kinds of yummy foot recipes that you can make on game-day. The chili & chicken fajitas look great!

We don’t review any products but recently 2011 Panini Absolute Football and 2011 Topps Chrome Football have come out - and I like the rookie autographs in both these. Both have on-card signatures, however I think there a few stickers mixed in … unfortunately Andy Dalton in Chrome is a sticker auto. Either way, I think these products have been the most fun to open recently.

I’ve talked about grading cards before, but it’s been a while. I don’t think my tune has changed too much, except I have been a buyer of grading cards more recently. Personally I feel there are only 2 companies you should consider when you want to send cards in.

We do talk a bit about 2011 Topps Update Baseball. This set is pretty cool, about what we normally see from Topps. I like the Jumbo Patch All-Star relic cards #/6 - there seems to be a large set checklist of these and it would be fun to try and bid on your favorite player.

Also, the Bengals former QB Carson Palmer was traded to Oakland for at least a #1 and #2 NFL Draft Pick. The Raiders really needed a QB to keep the sell-outs going, but the sure did trade away a lot to get him. The Bengals rate at getting 2 starters for a QB that quit on them, I think both teams got what they needed.

This month we’ll talk about multiple topics that involve making money (or selling) your cards, as it’s very tough to make money in this business. However, most of the time people are trying to ‘copy’ other sites or business models - like how many ‘auction’ clones have come and gone over the years? 1,000’s is my guess. However take a site like Check Out My Cards - they are offering a different experience and based on how often they are hiring over the past year, seems like they have a good business going. They didn’t copy eBay or the Auction Site experience, they made their own site and collectors seem to enjoy it.

All the time I get people e-mailing me about how they can buy/sell boxes wholesale for a profit. My response is almost always the same: you really can’t make much money & chances are you’ll loose money. What most people don’t understand is that you need to add value for the buyer to give up 10+ years of buying from his card store, DA Card World & Blowout Cards to shop with you. Price is not going to be the reason. That is, unless you want to wait around for 10 years to build up collector’s trust = you better find some other reason for the collector to buy from you over the ‘big guys’. (Although getting the customers trust by providing a great service is what you are always after in any business).

One way to sell boxes is to actually attach a service to the end product. One good example of a site I see doing this is Mojo Break. This week we talk to one of the sites founders to discuss the finer points to making a box break happen and how Mojo Break helps collectors get into box breaks easier by creating a marketplace on their website.

- The basics behind setting up a box break, including having all the supplies, costs, getting people and being organized.

- What your site is setting out to do with Box Breaks & the type of box breaks you’ve done

- What’s your hobby background, like when you started collecting and what you’ve collected over the years

- What’s been the biggest pull(s) from a group break you’ve done

We don’t get a chance to talk about these products on the show. But recently 2011 Topps Triple Threads Baseball has come out and it contains lots of nice cards. I’d be careful if you’re on a budget with this on buy the box (as they tend to be hit or miss) but the single card market should blowup as the checklist is deep.

2010 Topps Prime Football is one of this season early products that does have some nice autographs of the top rookies. This set contains mostly 2011 rookies - so if you’re hunting for veteran/HOF players, you might want to look elsewhere.

2010/11 Panini Elite Black Box Basketball is out - complete checklist here - and they are some pretty nice looking cards. I was disappointed to not really see too many Jordan Crawford cards, but there are tons of nice Lakers, Celtics and Kevin Durant cards in this product.

2011 Topps Chrome Baseball is out! The company added a few names to the autograph RC’s but took away the ability to score an entire 2011 USA Baseball Team set … instead redemptions are for 5-6 autograph card packs. This set doesn’t have any ‘true’ prospects/rookies - as most of these guys have had signatures in Bowman and Elite….however the cards are pretty nice.

Totally Certified Basketball, and I’m totally pumped no on is really paying much attention to the NBA because Jordan Crawford Auto’s from this set sure don’t sell for much. This is a pretty nice set, and I even give details on how to win a FREE BOX during the show! The only thing about this set is that it put pressure on hobby shops to buy Totally Certified, Gold Standard, and Season Update - all which come out within weeks of each other. The clear winner is Gold Standard, and we’ll be talking about that set on the next podcast.

Release Dates that were recently moved back: Topps UFC Title Shot 5/11 Pinnacle Hockey 4/27 Bowman Baseball 5/18

New eBay fees (and new USPS 1st class shipping rates) went into effect this past week, so if you sell online you might want to double check your margins. If you are like me, and only sell a few things here and there - it might be a good thing to list an item at any price for free (up to 50 times per month) on eBay. Final Value Fees (FVF) now include shipping charges, so its best to factor that in when you are planning expenses.

Upper Deck & Panini have been battling to see which company can come out with the coolest video card. Upper Deck was the first to bring their card to market - and Panini will do the same in 2010-11 Totally Certified Basketball. The sports card business tends to ‘copy’ ideas from each-other all the time anyway, so it doesn’t really matter in the end. It is good that these companies compete, because it forces them to come up with new ideas & products like video cards.

US Soccer player Landon Donovan is now signing autographs for Upper Deck. He was seen recently signing trading cards and other items for Upper Deck, including 2011 Upper Deck Soccer, which just released.

While Upper Deck had Landon Donovan in the house signing autographs, a package from Tiger Woods came in, and it included his tournament worn shirts he just wore at The Masters golf tournament.

Two good sports card shows are next month - so plan ahead if you want to attend. Both are May 20 - 22nd: Pittsburgh XXXIII in Corapolis, PA - and the TriStar SF Show in San Francisco, CA.

2010/11 Panini Classics Basketball Its possibly basketball collectors care more about jersey cards, and less about on-card autographs … but if you are like me, I really like sets like Classics basketball. All 40 of the RC cards are signed on-card, and the price per box is about what you would pay for other Panini basketball boxes. This year has Kevin Durant Autographs for the first time as well. If you are looking for good rookies to collect from this set, Greg Monroe, Jordan Crawford, DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe have chances to go up next year. John Wall and many of the top picks are limited, but most of the other rookies are serial #/699.

2011 Upper Deck Evolution Video Cards have introduced a new kind of card to collect, that I think could have some legs if the companies can improve further on the technology. I think it would be neat (and make these cards more collectible) if you could download highlights & exclusive video throughout a season (or career) of the athlete on the front. Panini has Autograph versions in the works - but I think non-auto versions could be collected by non-collectors and fans.

Authorized Online Retailers and Minimum Advertised Pricing have been hot topics for business owners & collectors alike. In the short term, it probably means slightly higher prices and less options as a buyer/collector. However, in the long term - it should help strengthen hobby profits - which will help values and collectibility of cards in the future. Instead of having minimum prices or really restricting sales, I think ‘case-toppers’ or incentives to hobby stores who regularly purchase product could be equally as effective - and not effect prices to the end consumer (collector) as much. Say for example if you buy a case of 2010/11 Panini Classics Basketball - you get a special pack as a hobby store owner that has either a Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, John Wall or Blake Griffin Autograph inside? The store owner could sell the pack, the autograph or use it as a promotion to help sell the boxes of 10/11 Classics that just arrived. Plus collectors will start to learn that going to hobby stores (or finding their online/eBay store) will be the only way to find these ’special edition’ cards.

At the same time hobby manufactures try to maintain price integrity - eBay and USPS have raised rated - so you’ll want to keep an eye on those if you do a lot of selling online.

Personally I’ve had fun recently going to Stockton Ports Games (Oakland A’s A+ Minor League Team) We’ve been following young prospects like Michael Choice and Max Stassi.

Even on a limited budget, buying/selling cards for the challenge against my brother has been fun. The fact that I need to make profits forces me to lower prices when things don’t sell, but given some time I think I’ll have a nice portfolio that should increase in value as the year rolls along.

2010 Topps Five Star Football + 2010 National Treasures Football are both live super premium NFL sets to cap off an eventful year of football cards. The most interesting thing about these sets is Topps 5 Star sells for over $100 more than SRP ($400) and National Treasures sells for about $50 less than sRP of $400. It just goes to show how tough it is to make money as a hobby shop … as you would have probably ordered both products - done well with one, and broken even or made very little with the other. Obviously there are many factors involved, but these two similar high-end products, released at around the same time, are a great example of how prices move up/down.

Panini made an Official Response to the 2010 Certified Mirror Black Sam Bradford (among other nice cards) and that can be found here. Recently Panini has posted short videos of soon to be released sets being packed out to ease box busters/sellers fears of this happening again. While the official statement doesn’t say anything about trying to avoid this situation in the future - the backlash within the community should be enough to get Panini to try and avoid a situation like this happening again.

On the last podcast I talked about buying some cards on eBay for the first time in a long time - and my brother decided to get involved and we are now making a challenge. Basically each of us is investing $20 a month in cards and the person with the highest total cash & card value wins it all. I ended up selling the Wesley Matthews 09/10 Timeless Treasures Auto RC I bought (Listed it on eBay the day I got it) and made $1.81 selling it. Talk about a quick turnaround! My brother has made some sales already too - and its pretty amazing that in less that 2 months, I’m up almost 5% and I have almost 50% of my investment in cash (as of Feb. 15 2011). I did end up buying some cards I’ve seen sell online for fairly cheap prices. I guess you could call these my PC or Personal Collection - although I would never hesitate to sell them for a good price. I ended up getting 4 PSA graded LA Lakers Cards from the same seller (to save on shipping) The best cards I got were these 2 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 1981 Topps Cards.

2010 Panini Plates & Patches Football - A set like this is an interesting sell for Panini. With Contenders and National Treasures (plus Topps 5 Star Football) on the release date calendar for 2010 Football, its probably tough for everyone to get on board with a high end product this late in the season … actually football is over. Plus you have the anticipation of 2011 NFL Rookies and on top of that there may be no NFL season in 2011. All that aside, the product looks really nice and it’s probably something that would have sold better in the beginning on the season - or earlier in the NFL Calendar, because it does deliver some nice hits. I’d stay away from boxes on this one - and wait for the even more premium 2010 NFL sets to come (Upper Deck even has Exquisite planned) … so unless you have hundreds of dollars to spend, I’d say this is a product you can just find singles of.

2010 Topps UFC Knockout - Talk about getting knocked out when I looked at prices for autographs in this set. Don’t get me wrong, I already knew top fighters sold for a ton of money (often more than Brett Favre, Derek Jeter and many ‘famous’ athletes sell for) … but this set is really popping if you pull a low number auto of a top fighter. GSP, BJ Penn, Quinton Jackson, Chuck Liddell and Anderson Silva low number autograph and relic cards sell for huge money. There are lots of other fighters as well. Even the ring girls Arianny Celeste and Brittany Palmer auto/relics sell for huge money … which makes you wonder why NFL/NBA don’t have more Cheerleader cards. But anyway, this set is pretty loaded - but don’t expect to win the lotto on every pack or box - the high end stuff sells for huge money, but there are plenty of ‘duds’ and its possible people don’t pay these prices for long.

A Collector on the Hobby Kings Forum posted pictures of cards he has described as replacements for redemption and damaged cards he sent to Panini America. In return he gets the Case/Product Hit from 2010 Panini Certified Football, a #1/1 Sam Bradford Auto/Jsy RC worth potentially thousands of dollars. He also received several other nice cards, including a #1/1 Derrick Rose and Tom Brady #5/5. These cards (especially the Sam Bradford) bring up lots of questions on why these cards weren’t originally inserted in packs … and how many other #1/1 Product Hits does Panini still have hanging around in the office?? At the time of recording, no ‘official’ statement had been made from Panini, and collectors are waiting to hear what the explanation on this goof will be.

I decided to start spending a little more money on cards each month ($20 to be exact). On today’s podcast I tell you about a bidding strategy that worked for me (and has worked for me since recording the show as well). I will be monitoring what I buy closely, and I’ll be challenging my brother from Sports Card Report to see who can have the highest card portfolio value at the end of 1 year. We preview 2011 Topps Series 1 Baseball, which now has a wrapper redemption added for Hobby and Jumbo boxes only. There will be a chance at getting real diamonds in this stuff, these cards are 1/1 but with 330 total versions (1 for each base card) there is a chance! Collectors now don’t have to wait long as the release date was moved up to February 2, 2011. We will have to wait to find out all the SP and variation cards, as nothing too concrete has come out, other than the standard inserts.

There were lots of products that came out over the last few weeks … too many to talk about on the show. So we take 2 products that have come out recently that people seem to like.

2010 Bowman Draft Pick and Prospects Baseball This product came out in mid-December and has many prospect and rookie autograph cards. You’ll even find AFLAC Bryce Harper Autographs inserted - those sell for $500+ at the moment. There are lots of young talented players in this set - and we will find out more about them over the coming months. Boxes were PreSale around $79.99 but have gone down a little since release.

2010/11 Panini Limited Hockey This set contains all serial numbered cards - and you’ll also find many of the top 10-11 Hockey Prospects autographs. Maybe the coolest jersey card set of the year so far for hockey are the Manufactured Marks #1/1, which contain jumbo Reebok logos (and possibly others). This set came out right before Christmas on December 22 - and has been selling fairly well on the secondary market.

1956 Topps Baseball We go back in time to 1956 Topps Baseball. This set is known for the two different card stocks Grey & White … each have short prints depending on the card number. The Checklist cards from this set have no numbers on them, and are tough to find in good condition. This set has 340 (+2 Checklists) cards, which was more than most of the sets Topps had come out with in the last few season. Bowman was its own company making cards before this season when Topps bought the company in 1955.

Top 10 Most Watch Sports Cards in 2010 This is a cool list where you can go back and see some of the most popular sales online over the past season. Stephen Strasburg cards set records both in terms of number of watchers and how much people paid for his cards early on in the 2010 baseball season. People still pay top dollar for his cards, but not nearly as much before he was injured.

2010 Panini Certified Football Very cool set that we were lucky to pull an Emmitt Smith Jersey Card from and Colt McCoy Prime Materials, who was playing well for the Cleveland Browns at QB before getting hurt. Check out the video, pictures & winners: 2010 Panini Certified Football Box Break.

2010/11 Panini Rookies & Stars Basketball We love basketball cards at Sports Card Radio, so its always fun to check out the newst cards from Panini. We got 2 Autograph Cards + 2 Jersey Cards, with one of the autos being Chris Bosh in his new Miami Heat uniform. You’ll find all the top 10/11 NBA Draft Picks in this set including John Wall.

2010 Topps Sterling Baseball Can’t say I know much about this set, other than its expensive! The interesting thing is the base set is 150 cards, but some players that have played for multiple teams like Nolan Ryan, Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez - will have mulitiple base cards for each team they have played for (in most cases). There are player theme packs within each box as well as a regular pack.

2010 Press Pass 5 Star Racing The super premium set - and only a select number of elite drivers make it into the set. The base cards are serial numbered to just 35. Each sealed wooden box actually contains 2 packs - one with a book card - one with the base card + other firesuit/autograph cards.

I talked about Wesley (Wes) Matthews on a previous show when he got a few starts over the injured Brandon Roy. He now starts for the TrailBlazers - and looks to be a quality player. He has some rookie cards from last season that have been going up due to his quality play: 2009/10 Wes Matthews RC Rookie Card Checklist Amar’e Stoudemire and Paul Millsap have been playing well too early in the season.

We talk about Certificates of Authenticity or COA for buying autographs. I would say that the majority of these are fake authentication - and you should only purchase autographs authenticated by TriStar, Upper Deck and PSA/DNA. There are others, but these are the most trusted in the business at the current time. I personally would not spend money on an autograph unless it was from one of those companies.

This week we talk about a product we had the pleasure of breaking an entire box of recently. 2010/11 Panini Limited Basketball Box Break was a great one and 1 lucky fan forum member was able to take down all the cards for free! The cards were thicker than I remember past versions of this set being - and it feels like an expensive set. Every card is serial numbered - we even pulled a Kevin Love autograph before he went on his record setting rebounding tear in the NBA.

2010 Topps Triple Threads Football is probably a set we won’t be able to bust open in person, but its filled with triple hits all over. You’ll find triple auto’s, triple relic cards and more. The coolest cards are probably the Jumbo Sleeve Patch Book-Cards.

We touch on a video I got from a listener about how he turned $99 into over $1,400 when he really needed it the most. Sure is cool to see people hit it big when collecting cards - especially people that have served for this country and needed the money too.

We haven’t done a show in a while where we just kind of talk about all kinds of different things. We’ll talk about 2010 Bowman Chrome Baseball and 2010/11 Panini Limited after our Box Break Contests this month.

2010 Just Minors Jersey Baseball This set is pretty cool - and not all that expensive if you are willing to take a gamble on an unopened box. You get 1 autographed Full Jersey per box/pack. There are Game Used Jerseys inserted 1:120 Boxes (some auto’d some not). This set takes you away from traditional cardboard, and gives you an entire signed jersey of some recognizable MLB players and prospects. These jerseys sell on the secondary market as well if you don’t want to gamble on a box purchase.

2010/11 Score Hockey Still not enough information on this set to run to the store and buy it … but we will find out this week. Its cheap ($0.99 Per Pack) and rookies fall 1:2 Packs. There are autographs 1:20 Hobby Boxes - so they are rare, but the Anniversary Buy-Back Cards will probably sell well if you pull one. You will also find the top 2010/11 NHL Rookies and redemption cards for future rookies.

2010 Panini Crown Royale Football This might be the best Panini Football product to date in 2010 … we’ll see when it comes out November 3rd. People are loving the design and look of the Rookie Die Cuts … myself included. I’ll probably wait until the set cools off - and possibly wait until even more premium 2010 football sets like Topps Five Star and Topps Supreme - to pick up a Jermaine Gresham and Jordan Shipley being a Bengals fan.

I make a call on this show - if Stephen Strasburg 2010 Topps Update Peak Performance Autographs are still selling in the $140 - $150 range 6 months from now … I’ll buy a $150 box for a Free Box break on Sports Card Radio.

2010 Panini Absolute Memorabilia Football We had the priveledge to open one of these hobby boxes recently - and really like the look of the cards, along with the quality. I didn’t see any noticible damage or dings to the corners or edges, which is good to see in a premium product. You will find 1 Tiple Memorabilia Autograph RC Card per box among many other hits.

2010 Donruss Elite Extra Edition EEE Baseball Cool product that has some interesting quirks and players inside. The main focus is on the baseball prospects that have autographs - many considered RC autographs within the set. You also have Bay Watch star Pamela Anderson signing cards. Also of note - Jordan Swagerty Autograph Cards often feature the signature of NBA Legend Magic Johnson …. so you might want to go check those if you have any.

2010 Topps Update & Highlights Baseball This set covers the second half of the MLB season - but you will recognize many of the names in the set. The most interesting cards might be the 2010 All-Star Game Relic & Autograph sets. You also have Collector Sketch Cards - which should be interesting to see what those sell for on the secondary market.

2010 Panini Certified Hockey One of the first sets of the season - and one that will set you back around $8 - $10 per pack. There are the top NHL draft picks, along with many familiar veteran, retired and current NHL hockey players. This set has something for every hockey collector.

2010 Topps Finest Football For whatever its worth - people have been claiming that this is the ‘early season product of the year.’ There is some good value inside a complete hobby box - and even just 1 mini box should have a nice hit. The rookies are really what everyone is after - including SuperFractor and other parallel cards.

2010 Topps Chrome Baseball This was supposed to be a very expensive and hot selling product if Stephen Strasburg stayed healthy. As it is, you still see strong prices on Mike Stanton Autographs and even Strasburg and Heyward auto’s sell pretty well online.

2010/11 Panini Prestige Basketball Kicking off the NBA season with a solid mid-priced product that contains 2 autographs and 2 jersey cards per box. People are paying between $150 - $200 for John Wall autographs … all the other rookies fall in the $60 or less. You will also find LeBron James in a Heat uniform.

Chris Davis This guy was 2nd in AAA in batting average with a .327 AVG in 103 games. He has seen some time in the MLB this season - and you can find rookie cards of his in the 2006 Bowman Chrome Draft Baseball Set.

Hank Conger This guy goes way back on the show - as we’ve talked about him at various times over the years. He did get into 5 games this season in the MLB - but did well at AAA batting .300 for the season. He is only 23 in 2011 and it might be his time to make the majors from day 1. You can find his rookie cards in the Hank Conger Rookie RC Card Checklist.

Russ Mitchell This LA Dodgers player doesn’t really have much on the market for cards - but did bat .315 in 103 games in AAA this year. He has some power and probably has a shot at the MLB team next season as he has spent time on the roster in 2010.

Reynaldo Rodriguez This Red Sox 1B got hot late in the season in A ball - and ended up batting .281 for the year. He doesn’t have any cards on the market - however it possible he may be included in the upcoming 2010 Topps Pro Debut Series 2 Box.

Product Discussion

2010 Topps UFC 4 This is a UFC product you should find just about everywhere including the retail level. It has many debut autographs including Tapout owners Punkass and SkyScrape. You will find just about every fighter that has made a recent appearance in the UFC - so its worth checking out if you are a fan of the octagon.

2010 Upper Deck UD NCAA Sweet Spot Football This product has seen some love from collectors that are given something other than on-card and sticker autographs. The familiar ‘helmet’ autographs feature signatures of most of the top NFL Draft Picks and a select number of former college and NFL greats. Barry Sanders, Dan Marino along with Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow autographs highlight this set. Boxes have been going up in price - and I believe its a no redemption product from Upper Deck.

2010 Topps Platinum Football Unlike Sweet Spot Football (which is hobby only) you will find this at the retail and hobby shops around the country. The hobby boxes deliver 3 RC autographs on average - and we’ll be busting a box of this later this month!! A pretty simple set that reminds me of 2010 Topps Finest and 2010 Topps Chrome Football a little bit.

2010 Topps Football

We actually opened a box of this for a contest we had at the begining on the month where over 30 fan forum members each got a pack of cards. The cards are nice - you only get 1 ‘hit’ in a hobby box, however you get Gridiron Code Give-A-Way cards where you have a chance at many Topps Cards from the past. One of our members redeemed his code for a 1950’s era Topps Football Card!! Pretty Cool! Similiar design and feel to the 2010 Topps Series 1 and Series 2 Baseball + Gridiron Code Giveaway is a nice addition to the product.

Random Stuff Check out the press release over at Card Corner Club about a new place to sell cards. Its interesting - seems like they only charge you if the item sells so it might be a good option for sellers and buyers. Probably worth checking out if you a serious collector looking for more outlets to buy and sell cards.

Schwab.com - If you want one of the best deals in investing - this has to be one. I even told this to a friend of mine that owns his own brokerage account (in a foreign country) and he was impressed. Basically you can sign up for a Free Checking account, which is pretty cool because you get an ATM card that they refund all ATM charges you rack up during the month - I got over $15 back last month!   You also get a free brokerage account where you can trade Schwab owned ETF’s (I’ve purchased SCHB & SCHG) with NO COMMISSION!! That’s right no fee to trade buying or selling. Pretty cool. No minimum investment or balance, no hidden charges, checking account pays intrests, free checks, ATM Fees given back - this is the best deal in banking.

Google’s new priority Inbox is actually pretty cool! Its a step to make that one of the best e-mail programs available. I think its now better than Yahoo by a longer margin - but Outlook is still a great product from Microsoft … I just don’t use it.

2010 Panini Rookies & Stars Football Box Checklist

This product is a recent release that contains all the top NFL draft picks - and a select number of veteran NFL stars. You should be able to find this product just about everywhere - and there are some good rookie autograph and relic cards to be found. It looks like the 2010 NFL Draft class is going to be a good one and many have improved their stock (card values) during the preseason.

Buying Wholesale Sports Cards List

The list above is really all you need here….especially if you are on the West Coast - as most of the dealers listed were ones that I have used personally in the past when I used to sell cards for a living. Always do a search around your area too - as you may find a distributor or wholesaler nearby. In the segment - I really talk a lot about your preparation and what you need to look at (profit margin) over a 3-6 months sales timeframe. Make sure to track what you spend vrs what you make so you can find out how your investment is going. I also discuss a little about promotion, including the internet and sites like Twitter and Facebook.

2010 Panini Classics Football A cool set that has been around since the Donruss days that highlights legends as well as current players and rookies. The ‘base’ rookies are #/999 and there are autographs and other cool inserts. Dallas Cowboys Fans will want to be on the lookout for the 50th anniversary cards that are included in the set.

2010 Sports Kings Series D This is a Multi-Sport product where you will find not only baseball football and basketball stars - but tennis, golf, poker, volleyball, boxing and many other ‘kings’ of their sports in this set. This is a gamblers product by the box, but there are some cool cut autographs and other inserts including Martin Luther King Jr.

09/10 Hall of Fame Basketball This is a ‘new’ set from Panini (most sets are anyway but the strictly legend/HOF player checklist is an interesting set makeup. You will find actual game used 1992 Dream Team Olympic Jersey cards in this set along with many of the NBA greatest players. Cool set, but I bet you can wait a bit for the price to drop from the initial release.

2010 Score Football I actually like this product - its a low end $1.00 Per Pack - but there is a good mix of veteran autographs along with the 2010 NFL draft picks. Don’t expect to get an autograph unless you buy a large amount of this product by the pack. However you may want to check around for single card autographs as there will be some deals to be had.

2009/10 Panini Crown Royale Basketball This is a cool ‘retro’ product that brings back memories of Pacific Crown Royale Baseball and Football sets. The familiar crown cut-out at the top of the cards make for some unique pieces of cardboard. There will be rookie card autographs #/499 or less that will be on-card signatures. You will also find many other top NBA player cards like Kobe Bryant and the New Big 3 LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

On Show #55 of The Sports Card Show Podcast we talk about the #1/1 Superfractor Stephen Strasburg that originally sold for $16,403 - was graded 9.5 Gem Mint from BGS - in the process of being sold online for a final selling price of $25,000 dollars!! Wow - that’s an impressive return even with all the fees associated with selling and grading!!

We also noted that the #1/1 Red Autograph Parallel was getting bids in the 6 Figures!! Well, that auction was taken down and now the card will appear at a Huggins & Scott auction soon. We’ll update you when that happens.

2010 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball This is always one of my favorite sets to just look at - as I’ve never actually opened any boxes of this stuff myself until this year. I love the fact that it includes non-baseball athletes, celebrities and other people. I make a point on the show that you should look to share these cards with people that have a passion for those things and it may open up the doors to collecting to someone that would have never had interest otherwise. A set like this gets criticized for having too much non-baseball (this year has animal cards) but I think its great - and brings attention to baseball cards - which is always good.

09/10 Panini Court Kings This is a set - that if it came out in December would have probably sold out. Not that it won’t or hasn’t now - but now that the season is over and the 10/11 Rookies are already having Press Conferences with the teams … I’d be wanting those players. Nevertheless its a cool set and hopefully it will keep prices down on what otherwise was supposed to be a $100 a pack product. The base cards are all serial numbered in this set - I love that for some reason, because it makes even those cards somewhat collectible even after the fact. Plus it adds to the excitement of putting together an entire base set because they are all numbered cards. I’m criticizing the release point of this set - but in actuality it helps keep the price down so I think this is a winner for basketball collectors. Keep in mind though, that Crown Royale Basketball, Panini Update, Hall of Fame, and National Treasures all still will come out under the 09/10 label - so more is coming.

09/10 SP Authentic Hockey

2010 Donruss Elite Football

I tease throughout the show that I would discuss some Bengals draft picks but I never talked about it. So here are the players I thought might have an impact for us this season.

Jermaine Gresham - this guy is our #1 and is a tall/athletic TE. He probably will only play on certain packages to begin with as the Bengals have some depth at the position, but he is the future of the passing game if he develops.

Dezmon (Dez) Briscoe - A late round pick, that appeared to flash some great footwork and burst when I was watching video of him online. However, his hands and toughness might keep him off the field most of the year. The Bengals can develop WR’s so it will be interesting to see how this works out.

Jordan Shipley - Seems like the Bengals are very high on this WR. He plays the slot role and we certainly have an opening there for him. He won’t start - but he will have plenty of opportunities to make plays much like Austin Collie did for the Colts last season.

There really is no topic for the show today, however we discuss some Baseball Prospects that might be the next to catch fire this season. We also talk about the month ahead and the one that just past. Its been a busy month for Sports Card Collectors. We’ll go more in-depth on the Upcoming Releases including Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball and Donruss Elite Football.

Mike Stanton - Has been playing extremely well and looks like he is on the fast track to the majors. Not the first time we talked about Mike or Micheal Stanton - and it probably won’t be the last.

Starlin Castro - Probably the third time his name has come up, but for good reason. I always say that prospects that play for the Cubs, Yankees or Red Sox have an edge because of the fan bases those clubs have. Even if Starlin Castro is not a ’super-star’ solid and consistent number will make him stand out in Chicago.

Jose Iglesias - We originally talked about him before he had any real trading cards on the market. Mainly for the same reasons I mention above except he plays for the Red Sox. He has a card in 2010 Bowman Baseball and I would consider this to be his Rookie or RC card + worth looking into.

Brandon Belt - Don’t know much about this guy, other than my brother was watching a bunch of his cards last week. My brother made me aware of Pablo Sandoval and Stephen Strasburg - well before anyone really knew who they were, so I figured I better give this guy a shout out. Apparently he has been tearing it up in the minors.

Hank Conger - Only briefly mention this guy - but I checked his stats last week and he was hitting .280 and over .400 in his last 10 games. He is still young, and has not proven he can stay healthy. However, I still see this guy as a solid buy considering he hasn’t gotten a chance yet…but it will come.

Lastly we discuss how the 2010 Bowman Stephen Strasburg Superfractor sold online for 16,403!! That’s an amazing price for a card with no autograph or jersey +++ not being 50+ years old. Its another sign that sports cards are as hot now as they have been in a long time.

2010 Topps Series 2 Baseball

This set is similar to Topps Series 1 except you will find a few new surprises in this set. The short print base cards (remember PITF and the legends that were SP in series 1) are now announced - and have a stated print run of 3,000. The Million Card Give-A-Way now will include original T-206 cards that collectors can hunt down online. Look for this set to be out on Thursday May 27, 2010.

2009/10 Panini Absolute Memorabilia Basketball

Another football carry-over for Panini/Donruss - but this is a good one to bring over from the gridiron side. Tools of the Trade and RPM Rookie Cards have been popular with collectors and people seem to enjoy them for basketball. The only thing about this set was the timing … only a week after Timeless Treasures Basketball - which was another expensive product from Panini. It might sell better if you spread out releases out more.

We discuss upcoming 2010 Football Card Releases along with some of the rookies that might make an impact this season. Be sure to join Chris in his box breaks along with the fellow listeners.

2010 Bowman Baseball is as hot as I can remember a Bowman set ever being. It all revolves around 3 players autographs - Stephen Strasburg, Jason Heyward and Starlin Castro. Be careful to not get wrapped up in the hype as this product can become expensive if you are opening it by the box. By the end of the season, this product may not look quite as nice as it does not - or it could look better if the prospects and rookies play well. Tough call - but be careful not to overspend here early.

09/10 Panini Timeless Treasures Not exactly everyone’s favorite product, but it is a good attempt at a ‘new’ product from Donruss/Panini to establish itself in the basketball card market for next season. I’ve got to say - some of these single cards will be worth checking out if you are a bball fan. More deep checklists and interesting inserts to chase after - and Panini could have a winner here in the long run.

2010 Playoff Prestige Football Not sure if its even called Playoff Prestige anymore - but same difference. Collectors will again complain here that this set looks an awful lot like many other mid-low priced Panini Products. You can tell not a bunch of time was spent on this set, but these early big-print run sets tend to get pumped out quick because the company wants to get the product out as fast as it can. We’ll see if collectors look past all that and scoop up Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford no matter what a card looks like…my guess is that they will.

The RC cards will feature draft day photos and the checklist is fairly large and should be a great way to start the 2010 football season off.

2009/10 Panini Timeless Treasures Basketball - May 12, 2010 This is ones of Panini’s largest checklists to date. There are many autographs and parallels contained within this set making it one of the more exciting releases to date. With Absolute Memorabilia and Court Kings to follow, it will be interesting to see if basketball collectors spend big on a set like this.

2009/10 Panini Absolute Memorabilia Basketball - May 19, 2010 This popular football release is sure to be a hit with basketball collectors. The jersey cards and autographs look great and the checklist is fairly large. Expect many basketball collectors to be running light in the wallet after this and Timeless Treasures Basketball come out within 1 week of each other.

2010 Topps Series 2 Baseball - May 27, 2010 With the popularity of the Topps Million Card Give-A-Way and many other SP variation cards, collectors are surely waiting for Topps Series 2 baseball. The checklist is massive and considering how much Series 1 boxes have gone up in price recently - expect this product to do the same.

2010 Press Pass Football marks the first release with certified Tim Tebow and many other future 2010 NFL Draft Pick Autograph and Jersey Cards. This is an interesting set because of the Red Ink and Inscription variation autograph cards. You can find the complete 2010 Press Pass Football Checklist and more at Sports Card Radio.

2010 Razor Legends of the Diamond and SAGE High Series Football are two products we cover briefly on the tail end of the show. Both of these products are worth taking a look at for different reasons. 2010 Razor Legends of the Diamond is essentially a re-packaged PSA 7 + vintage pre 1970 baseball product … where you are paying for the chance at big hits like a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Autograph. SAGE High Series will be worth taking a look at once the 2010 NFL Draft shakes out. Its possible that despite Press Pass locking up guys like Tim Tebow and CJ Spiller that they aren’t the top rookies that everyone is after … meaning a product like SAGE might have more ‘Top Rookies’ than people think … only time will tell.

2010 Topps Finest Baseball

2 (6 Pack) Mini Boxes per Hobby Box Look For 1 Autograph card per mini box and 1 2010 RC redemption card in each hobby box. There are plenty of letterman patch autograph ‘true’ baseball rookies like Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey along with 18 other rookies. Expect to pay around $100 for a complete box when it comes out March 24, 2010.

09/10 Panini Classics Basketball

18 Pack - 5 Cards Per Pack Look for 4 autograph or jersey cards per box with at least 1 auto. A sealed box will set you back around $95, however this is one of the final ‘mid level’ price point proucts that Panini has planned for 2009/10 season. 09/10 Panini Court Kings, 09/10 Panini Absolute Memorabilia, 09/10 Panini Crown Royale and 09/10 Panini Timeless Treasures are all sets that Panini has planned that will be higher end products that will deliver less cards on a pack/box basis. Panini Classics and the recently release 09/10 Panini Studio Basketball may be sets to look into if you enjoy opening lots of pack & cards.

Our last segment is a good one for those who are in the business of selling cards online, or those that just want to know a bit more about the topic. This is Topps first product using the MiLB license that they obtained several months ago. This is for the prospector or the Rookie Card collector as you won’t find the veterans and stars in the MLB. Only Minor League Baseaball’s brightest stars (and a few young MLB Prospects like Madison Bumgarner)

There are 24 packs per box - 8 Cards Per Pack 1 Jersey Card Per Box + 2 Autograph Cards

Keep in mind this is Series 1 so we expect some of the 2009 MLB draft picks to make it into Series 2. A cool debut product from Topps, worth taking a look at if you are a rookie or baseball prospect collector.

Austin Jackson RC Cards

This prospect started in the New York Yankees organization and is now playing for the Detroit Tigers. He has a nice Donruss Elite Extra Edition Autograph Rookie that may go up this season as he is projected to be a starter in Detroit.

Stephen Strasburg RC Cards

This hard throwing right hander was the #1 overall draft pick in 2009 by the Washington Nationals. He is expected to start the season in the minors but could see time in the MLB by the end of the season.

Jason Heyward RC Cards

This is the #1 Prospect in all of baseball. This hard hitting OF for the Atlanta Braves should see some time in the MLB this season. Be careful buying his cards … often hyped rookies have to really play well for them to keep going up. Jason Heyward may be one of those players when his career is finished.

Jeremy Hellickson RC Cards

This young pitcher should find a spot on the Tampa Bay Rays roster this season, however he would be much farther up the pitching rotation on most other teams. Jeremy Hellickson shows great command and control when on the mound pitching. This could be a great prospect to purchase before he gets his chance in the MLB.

2009 Playoff National Treasures Football

This set may have lost its luster as a high-end brand as I saw many 1 color and some sticker autographs in some box break videos that I’ve seen recently of this product. We may have to go back and lower the grade we give this set in our review of 09 National Treasures Football.

2009 Playoff Contenders Football

I might even like this set for value over Playoff National Treasures. However the only thing I don’t like is that the design takes away from the signature on these cards. 8:12 Boxes contains 5 Autograph Cards instead of 4. Selling your cards….just not on eBay:

There are many places to sell your cards online. Check Out My Cards has gained popularity over a short period of time with collectors. I give out 4 more other options as well on the show. Just be sure to read through all the terms and conditions before you jump in and spend serious time listing cards on a site you haven’t used before.

How to price #1/1/Cards

Probably the best know method is to compare the price with a comparable #1/1 card. If it is difficult to find a particular player, just comparing him to another player of similar skill and popularity. Because 1/1 cards aren’t as ‘rare’ as they used to be (when they were first hitting the hobby) you can sometimes compare to cards serial #/3 #/5 and lower.

Troy Palamalu - Seems like how Troy goes, so goes the Steelers. If he is healthy in 2010, expect the Steelers to be fighting for another Super Bowl.

Mychal Thompson - Went to 4 NBA Finals and won 2 NBA Championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. Best known for backing up one of the greatest centers of all time Kareem Abdul Jabar.

Tom Nelson - Cincinnati Bengals 2009 Rookie - Best known for his coverage on ‘Hard Knocks’ HBO’s TV show about the Bengals 09 Training Camp in Georgetown.

No Purchase Necessary (NPN) Sports Card Companies cover themselves from trading card becoming a lottery or a gambling game by giving away things for free, or no purchase necessary. Its a great thing to take advantage of because these companies have to do it. Check the back of packs and other company promotional material to find out more about these offers.

Different Kinds of Jersey Cards You have All-Star, Event Worn, Shooting Shirts, Former Teams, Player Worn…ect Seems like you never just get a plain old Game-Worn Jersey Card.  However, this does keep the prices down and the odds of pulling a nice card better which isn’t something to really be too upset about. Just be careful that when you buy single jersey cards you know what you are getting so you won’t be disappointed.

Collecting in the 80’s & 90’s Lots of factors play out in to why this era of cards is not nearly as valuable as what came before it and after. Over-Production, Steroids, and other things made these pieces of cardboard pretty much worthless. We’ll see what happens down the road.

09/10 Exquisite Basketball will make its final run this year. Ricky Rubio, Tiger Woods, John Elway and more make it into the set. Sad to see such a great set come to an end.

Selling your cards at card shops is sometime difficult. Store owners tend to low ball you most of the time and we will discuss why they do this and ways you can get them to make better deals with you.

2009 Football rookies have done fairly well. Mark Sanchez has been playing great along with Percy Harvin. A couple of the other top picks (Heyward-Bay and Crabtree) haven’t done so well. All in all its been a good first three weeks to the NFL season and we’ll talk about some of the RC’s that have made an impact.

The court went in favor of Topps, making Upper Deck cease production on their 2009 O-Pee-Chee card sets because they looked similar to Topps cards. Also, Upper Deck is selling Tiger Woods’ US Open Game-Worn Shirts from Rounds 1, 2, and 3, costing $30 thousand to $50 thousand each. Each shirt is also autographed.
